Starting with NextCloud#

I finally got myself a MiniPC. Installed Linux on it and then NextCloud AIO. It was a bit of a hassle to get the port forwarding as I wanted it. AIO is also a bit finicky if you give it some incorrect information. It doesn’t complain until you try to get everything setup and it simply doesn’t work.

After the first few hurdles, I started tinkering with my shiny new NextCloud instance. I have to say, I am impressed. Some things are a bit minimalistic, but I can see that I will basically use it as my desktop.

  • I configured Mail to use it as my mail client.
  • I installed Recognize to get automatic tags for my pictures.
  • NextCloud has a MarkDown edtior. I wrote this in it, went to my hugo environment, created a new post and copied the contents over.
  • I am pretty impressed with Deck. Nice and easy way to organize tasks. Again, a bit minimalistic, but it also means that not a lot of things can get in the way.
  • There is an Android App. A bit minimalistic. It can be a bit confusing to select folders for the AutoUpload. You also have to decide for each folder what it should do if there is a duplicate. A centeral option would be nice.
  • The Notes app also writes things down in MarkDown. I might migrate things over from Evernote or install Obsidian.
  • I have an RSS feeder to get news in one location.

There are various other aps, like the calendar and contacts. You can even install more and add functionality. Some might be a bit tricky because it is running in a container that isn’t built by me. There isn’t really a way to tell AIO to install additinal packages inside the containers. So far this hasn’t been a complete show stopper.
